All the food in Italy is Pizza and Pasta?

Researching Italian culture and their customs including the cuisine and way of cooking I come across and look afer that they eat a lot of types of food, not only pizza and pasta.

Wine, cheese and pasta are important part of Italian meals but not the only. No one area of Italy eats the things as the next. Each region has a different way to cook “Italian Food”. “For Italians food is not just aliment, it is life”.

According to CNN. For example, most of the foods that Americans find out as Italian, such as spaghetti and pizza, come from Central Italy. includes the regions of Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, Marche and in some cases Abruzzo and Molise But in the North of Italy, fish, potatoes, rice, sausages, pork and different types of cheeses are the most common ingredients. In the South, tomatoes dominate dishes, and they are either served fresh or cooked into sauce. Southern cuisine also includes capers, peppers, olives and olive oil, garlic, artichokes, eggplant and ricotta cheese.

Italian people consider cooking as an important part of their life, art and love for family and friends that eat their food but here in Barranquilla despite having a lot of characteristic meals and love eat a lot we do not see the food as us life, we see the food as a delicious way to live the life that is different; In Barranquilla we grow up with a different conception about food.

Italy Subcultures

Italian festivals

In Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, during the spring there is a mask festival called “the Carnival of Venice” (Carnevale di Venezia), the most important in the country. In it, people dress up in typical Victorian costumes made with extreme dedication and taking care of the smallest detail. In addition, masks of all kinds are used, from the simplest to the most complex.

The importance of family

The very important role that the family plays in the lives of Italians is a characteristic that distinguishes the population of Italy. With "old-fashioned" families, in which each member fulfills a specific role, where respect and strong ties are essential. Baptism and marriage are two key points in the family, it is very common for mothers to baptize their children in the church choosing a godfather and godmother, who will be the surrogate parents in the cases that warrant it.

Music in Italy

Italians have two typical musical genres: opera and instrumental music. However, these styles vary according to each region of the country, where popular and romantic music is also included.

In short, music, like food and other aspects, has been the most representative symbol of Italian cultural identity since the end of the 16th century, when European classical music and opera began to develop.

After analyzing the different customs and subcultures of Italy, I found many differences between the subculture and Colombian customs. Here in Colombia we do not celebrate the Venice Carnival but we have a Barranquilla Carnival where we dance and enjoy the music and typical dances of the country, we also enjoy many types of music, most of them "Latin Music", such as Salsa, Reggaeon and Vallenato, which is very different from the Opera. Something that could be similar is the reverence for the meaning of Family with the difference that we do not make traditional families, we live independent of our family but with great appreciation and love for them.

Final Reflections

- What have you learned from the project?

I learned a lot from this project. Before, I only had a general idea of Italian culture, but now I think I really know them. The things we see in movies and TV shows are not fake, they just exaggerate Italian customs but it is real!

- What surprised you the most?

The most interesting thing is that they really make families and neighborhoods in a traditional way, selecting the function of each member and having favorite people to marry their children. "Select the future husband and wife."

- What did you enjoy the most?

What I enjoyed the most was thinking obout an Italian visit to our country, I am beginning to think that it is a good idea; both cultures belong to multi-active so we are open people and that's good for a foreigner in Barranquilla.

- What can you do with the information in your personal and professional future?

If in the future I travel to Europe, I will seriously try to visit Italy and check if they really eat more than pasta and pizza. I want to know how real the people are. They sound like warm and lovely people, that is great.
